Developers showing interest as garden centre is put on market

A family-run garden centre which is coming to the market for the first time since 1966 is one of the focal points of SDL Auctions North West’s July auction in Manchester.

Garsides Garden Centre is in a prominent location at 2-14 Oldham Road in Failsworth and is being sold due to retirement and is expected to attract interest as a potential development site.

Andy Thompson, senior valuer of SDL Auctions North West, said: “Currently this is a well-established, family owned and run garden centre with adjacent living accommodation and it is on a central location on the main arterial route into Manchester city centre, only two miles away.

“The options are to purchase it with a view to continuing with the current use as a garden centre where a successful business has been running for over 50 years.

“But the site is being sold with vacant possession and we are seeing a lot of interest from developments who recognise, subject to planning permission, the potential the site has.

“This is a quirky lot where viewing is essential to appreciate the full picture and envisage the possibilities,” he said.

The site extends along a busy main road with the outdoor garden centre at 2, 4 and 6 Oldham Road, the garden centre and office space with potential accommodation areas.

The current residential accommodation runs from 12 to 14 Oldham Road where two houses have been knocked though to make one property, currently laid out as four reception rooms and extended kitchen/diner on the ground floor, and four bedrooms, two with en-suite bathrooms, on the first floor. The private owners’ garden lies to the rear of 8-14.

The property has a guide price of £345,000+.

Andy Thompson said: “Garsides Garden Centre is a local institution and very well known locally. There is considerable interest in the future of the site, not just from developers but also the local community. It will be fascinating to see what the future holds for this particular lot in our next auction.”

SDL Auctions North West’s next auction is on Monday 23 July at the AJ Bell Stadium and anyone looking to sell under the hammer should call the team on 0161 774 7333 for a free auction appraisal.
