Bids invited on romantic ruins of Calwich Abbey Estate

The Calwich Abbey Estate has been put on the market.

The derelict remains of a once grand stately home have been put up for sale as part of a 200-acre estate.

The Calwich Abbey Estate, near Ellastone, is due to go under the hammer in May, offering 209 acres of agricultural and sporting land – along with part of the former Victorian mansion that stood on the site of a former abbey.

Listed under lot one of the sale, by Ashbourne property firm Bagshaws, is a 20-acre plot, formal gardens, a lake and a huge building that was once a grand stable block and servants' quarters to a house demolished in the 1930s.

Bagshaws consultant Nick Hansen says it is "almost impossible" to put a value on the property, given how unusual the opportunity is.

He said: "It really is something, this property. Its image and history are fairly unique and it's unusual to see an estate in this style with a ruin like that as part of it.

"Its setting and its lovely view across the valley could give someone the chance to own and look after a piece of history.

"They would need to have a big pocket, but I could see an opportunity to recreate the wonderful gardens and then perhaps to cherish the ruin for what it is.

"It's had a considerable amount of interest so far but we're staying open-minded about what it will make."
