Symonds & Sampson had a double celebration on 28 October as a packed sale room ensured that top prices were paid for all lots and it ended a very busy month with properties auctioned in Dorset, Devon and Somerset raising over £3 million.

Auctioneer Mark Lewis felt that it was a red letter day “We were fortunate to have some very interesting lots in the October auctions and the attention from prospective bidders was strong with one famous person adding a bit of Hollywood glamour.

Land at Stalbridge which is a site of nature conservation interest proved very popular. Home to some rare plants including the Hairy Oat, Corky Fruited Water Dropwort and the Devils bit Scabious it also had a spring and an old sheep dip. The guide of £50,000 for the 7 acres was comfortably exceeded and the hammer dropped at £86,000.

Caphays Cottage at Caundle Marsh near Sherborne was being marketed for the first time since 1960. Situated at the end of a long no through lane the property now needs complete renovation and was guided at £200,000. The interest was terrific and the sale price was £280,000.

Crossing Cottage near Shaftesbury was also being marketed for the first time in over 50 years. Situated next to the Exeter to London Waterloo train line the house would have been lived in by a railway worker and was now in need of updating. It was guided at £140,000 but sold for £170,000 with a London telephone bidder missing out to a local couple.
