Jesmond houses on one of the grandest streets to be sold at auction

Another seven houses on one of Newcastle’s grandest streets will be put up for auction by hard-up council bosses.

The sale of assets could net the council up to £2m when they go under the hammer in late spring.

The properties include two sets of adjoining terraced homes on the street and three other houses.

A city council spokesman said the sale would help the city recover after cuts imposed during the recession.

To date the council have already sold four homes on Jesmond Road West and four on the Great North Road, in Jesmond, for more than £2.6m.

The council said it no longer used the buildings on Jesmond Road West and cash made at auction will fund future developments.

A spokesman said: “For some time now the council has been in the process of selling surplus properties and unused parcels of land to invest in its capital programme to grow the city’s economy.

“The proposed auctioning of these properties in late spring is a continuation of that strategy.”

The up-and-coming auction comes just weeks after the council made £4m in a previous sale, which saw them sell off a Co-Op store, other houses and industrial units.

At the Lambert Smith Hampton auction at the Millennium Hotel in London two adjoining mid-terraced town houses on Jesmond Road West sold for £606,000, while three similar houses on Great North Road, sold for £1m.
