This house was up for sale for £1....

A semi-detached house with serious fire damage that went up for sale for £1 has sold for £21,000 at auction.

The guide price for the fire damaged property on Brangwyn Road, Tredegar, started at just £1 as the property had no reserve.

The property was described as the ultimate "fixer-upper" after it was ravaged by fire and only has a small section of its roof remaining, but could be worth £50,000 with a makeover.

The long list of problems looked set to put off many buyers, but that was not the case at last month's Paul Fosh auction in Cardiff and the property was snapped up by after fierce bidding in the room and on the telephone.

New owner Mindaugas Kalon, who travelled up the M4 to the South Wales auction with his partner and two small children, said he was unsure what he will do with the property.

The carpenter from London said: “We’re happy to have bought the house but wanted to pay less, maybe £15,000 but there were so many others bidding.

“We read about the house in the newspapers for sale for £1 and decided to come here to bid. We may do the place up and rent it out or may be put if up for sale we don’t know yet.”

Sean Roper, from Paul Fosh Auctions, said: “It was very competitive in that room, and there were four or five people bidding for the house.”
